Abuse Recovery

Supporting women, children and youth who have experienced or witnessed violence or abuse now or in the past

Within the Abuse Recovery Program at the Golden Family Center, there are three different programs to help women, children and youth who have experienced or witnessed violence or abuse in the past, or who are facing or witnessing violence or abuse now:

Counselling services for women impacted by sexual assault and violence in a relationship and/or childhood abuse and violence, either actively or in the past.

Stopping the Violence (STV) provides counselling to women 19 years of age or older who have experienced sexual assault, abuse and/or violence in relationships, childhood abuse and/or violence, or who are facing these situations now.

Where no other suitable services are available, the STV program also serves women who are under 19 and who are leading an adult lifestyle.

Counselling services for children and youth ages 4-18 impacted by abuse and/or violence within the home.

PEACE stands for: Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling, and Empowerment.

The PEACE Program provides counselling to children and youth ages 4-18 who have been impacted by abuse, and who have witnessed abuse, assault, threats or violence in the home.

The program also offers supportive services to the childʼs parents/caregivers.

Counselling services for children or youth under the age of 19 who have been sexually abused; and for children under the age of 12 who present with sexual behavioural problems (i.e. are acting out sexually).

The Sexual Abuse Intervention Program (SAIP) provides two types of services:

  • Specialized assessment and treatment services for children and youth under the age of 19 who have been sexually abused. It also provides support to their families or caregivers.
  • Specialized assessment, treatment, and consultation services for children under the age of 12 who present sexual behaviour problems, even when there is no clarity around the cause of the behaviours. It also provides support to their families or caregivers.

One-to-one, family, and group support is available. When appropriate, we can refer your child or teen to other related services.

  2. When information you disclose indicates that a child (defined in B.C. as a person under the age of 19) is at risk and is in “need of protection”. The counsellor or support worker is required by law (so is any member of the general public) to inform staff at the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
  3. For case consultation to ensure the provision of quality services. This occurs within our team at the Golden Family Center only.
  4. When disclosure of your information is for the purpose of complying with a subpoena, warrant or order issued or made by a court, person or body with jurisdiction to compel the production of personal information.
